Csomán János r.ftzls.

Where shall I begin? Perhaps I should start by stating that 4 years ago a János Csomán joined the Komárom-Esztergom County Police Force, recruited by Police BG Dr. László Illés, then Chief Constable of Komárom-Esztergom County Police. I had taken a keen interest in firearms and the shooting sport before that, but Csomi brought with him a new approach, and his obsession with this activity was contagious - I also became infected with it. During the shooting events - when we smelled gunpowder smoke together - the idea of a shooting competition took shape in our minds, containing the peculiar stages designed by Jani, and my contribution to the event was in the area of organisation.

The first competition was attended by 12 fellow officers from the county police in one category, that of the patrol officers. We held the competition every quarter, and the novelty event became extremely popular among the officer corps of the county police and more and more officers started entered for it. After 3-4 such competitions we had to break down the entrants into two categories, because having SWAT officers compete with patrol officers just did not seem fair. Soon after this, SWAT officers from the Budapest Metropolitan Police Force, then - through friendly contacts - from Hajdú-Bihar County Police and from Slovakia came to take part in the competition, and because they liked what they saw during the event, the word was spread around to other police units as well. Soon the interest in the event became so great that the SWAT section of the competition had to be held on a separate day due to the large numbers of entrants, and at this stage SWAT officers competed in teams rather than individually.

For the first time in the history of the event, the Acvila Anti-Terrorist Unit of the Romanian Ministry of Interior came to take part, then the Slovakian Witness Protection Service and the PPU unit from Kosice as well. On these occasions we had lengthy conversations with our foreign friends and with their efficient assistance we decided to try and host the competition on a larger scale. I take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to Milan Rusnak and Frici Tánczos, who helped me out with dozens of e-mail addresses and also with their personal contacts which allowed us to advertise this competition throughout Europe. Based on the personal contacts established during the competition of 2008 I started to organise the next event scheduled for May 2009 in November 2008. After sending over 800 e-mail messages and as the result of many hundreds of hours of Internet-research, the great plan we had with Csomi came true: 30 teams from 8 countries entered for the competition, which exceeded all our expectations. After this, Csomi and I burnt the midnight oil day in day out, to organise a competition with the help of our sponsors - whom we had to ask for assistance on account of the budgetary situation of the Hungarian National Police - from which the German or the Austrian teams could take home ample experiences and where the overall conditions are not reminiscent of a third-world country.

A great many thanks are due to Mr. Imre Árvai, owner of the Shooting Range of Dorog, who provided the venue for the competition - without his contribution the competition could not have come true. The now 2-day event became really memorable due to Csomi's crazy idea - he said to me: 'What if we conducted a 48-hour competition, with the competitors shooting at night as well, without a rest period?' ....As for the rest, you already know that ...
