Savin Juniper  ’Tamariscifolia’-  Juniperus sabina ’Tamariscifolia’

 

Habitat

  • native to Europe and western parts of Asia

Habit and Form

  • an evergreen shrub

  • a wide-spreading habit with a somewhat vase shape

  • 4' to 6' tall with a greater spread

  • medium texture

  • slow growth rate

Summer Foliage

  • evergreen, scale-like leaves

  • opposite leaf arrangement

  • leaves are 4-ranked

  • blunt apex

  • blue-green

  • older branches which have sharp pointed awl-like leaves

  • rank odour emitted when leaves are crushed

Flowers

  • dioecious

  • no ornamental value

Fruit

  • globose, berry-like cones

  • found on recurved stakes

  • brown

  • 4 to 6 scales

Bark

  • hard to see generally covered with needles

 

Healing effect:

 

This highly toxic juniper species’ branch peaks and berries were used in the ancient times to abortionist, because their oil triggers strong uterine cramps.

In case of wrong use it leads to death, or at least to severe liver and kidney damage, and the oil also can cause painful inflammation on the skin.

It highly irritates the skin and the mucosal.

In the folk healing it is used to wart cleaning, menstrual complaints, bladder irritation, externally against rheumatics.
