Malignant histiocytosis is a hereditary disease found in the
Bernese Mountain Dog characterized by
histiocytic
infiltration of the lungs and
lymph nodes.
The liver,
spleen, and
central nervous system can also be affected. Symptoms include cough,
loss of appetite, weight loss, and depression. Diagnosis requires a
biopsy. Treatment
with
chemotherapy has been used with some success. Because of the rapid
progression of the disease, the
prognosis is
poor.
