BIOGRAPHY :: ROXETTE

13 albums, about 40 singles, several tours in 18 years. Yes, that's Roxette. The pop-duo from Sweden, today, its members, Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle, are known all over the world. But let's see how it all started...

«1986-1991 | «1992-1998 | 1999-2004

1999

1999 - the year when Roxette returned. In February, "Have A Nice Day" was released. The first sigle, "Wish I Could Fly" became a major hit all over the world. The controversial video for the second single, "Anyone" was banned from most TV channels. The beautiful clip was only broadcast after 10 pm in many countries, because some 'experts' believed it suggested young people to commit suicide. A remix of "Stars" became the favourite song of discos during the summer. The video for the 4th single, "Salvation" was shot in Italy.

2000

This year was time for the comeback in the USA. Roxette signed a deal with the record company EDEL America. A US-version of "Don't Bore Us, Get To The Chorus" was released, containing "Wish I Could Fly" and "Stars" besides the greatest hits. Unfortunately the EDEL-deal didn't last too long...

2001

Quite an active year for Roxette. In April, "Room Service" was released. Although it was scheduled for a worldwide release, EDEL America cancelled the release in the last minute. The contract was broken, Roxette was no longer represented in the States. Elsewhere, 3 singles were released frm the album: "The Centre Of The Heart", "Real Sugar" and "Milk & Toast & Honey". From September to November, Roxette was on the road again, with a fantastic tour in Europe. Right after the tour, a DVD "All Videos Ever Made and More" was released, containing 40 music videos and 2 documentaries.

2002

In the autumn, "A Thing About You" was released, as the first - and sadly, the only - single from the first part of a two-set compilation series, "The Ballad Hits". Roxette was to take part in the concert series "The Night Of The Proms", however, they had to cancel it, due to a sad event. On September 11, Marie Fredriksson fainted in her bathroom. She hit her head and was taken to hospital, where it was turned out that she had tumour in her brain. The tumour was successfully removed, but Marie had to face serius chemo- and radio-therapy treatments.

2003

Roxette was awared the "Royal Medal with Blue Ribbon" by the king of Sweden, Carl Gustaf XIV. The ceremony was the first event where Marie appeared after her operation. "The Ballad Hits" was released in the United Kingdom before Valentine's Day, and due to an intensive promotion campaign, it went right to #9 in the UK album charts. A few months later, Capitol Records released the album in the United States, however, without any promotion. In the world outside the US, "The Pop Hits", featuring the single "Opportunity Nox" was released. Just like "The Ballad Hits", the first edition features a bonus EP with previously unreleased material.

2004

This year Per celebrated the 25th anniversary of his old Swedish band, Gyllene Tider. They released an album ("Finn 5 Fel" - Find 5 Mistakes) and went on tour in Sweden. This series of concerts actually became the second largest summer tour in Europe, as GT performed for almost a half million people. In the autumn, Marie made her comeback after recovering from cancer: she released a brand new solo album in English called "The Change".
