ray-finned fish, the only family of order
Salmoniformes. It includes the well-known
salmons and trouts; the Atlantic salmons and trouts of genus
Salmo give the family and order their names.
Together with the closely-related
Esociformes (the pikes and related fishes), the
Salmoniformes comprise superorder
Protacanthopterygii.
