The
first time was in February 2001, at the Shire river. I arrived at in the
middle of the wet season. Every day there were indescribable storms, the
raindrops were so heavy and fell with so much force that it almost hurt,
and then suddenly, as quick as it came, the storm was gone. The sun came
out and because of the 30-35° C temperature and the high humidity it felt
almost like a steam room. I was boating on the most beautiful part of
Africa with my wingman. I had only a few days left, we roamed the riverside
and the water everyday, we met birds, crocodiles, gazelles, but we only
saw the muck of the elephants. When I was about to give up, my wingman
noticed the three elephants in the water. They didn't really see us coming, two of them were fighting or just tested their strength. When the fight was over, two of them went for the shore, the one left behind was almost completely underwater, only his head and ears could be seen. Although we were close to the shore, the depth of the water was unpredictable. We slowly approached him and suddenly something incredible happened. The elephant stood up, the water was only as high as his knees. He stared at us, lifted his head and holding high his snout, spitting water, he started coming towards us. The surprise only allowed one shot then the boat started backing, when it stuck in seaweed and got slower. I held the side of the boat to keep my balance. Behind us I heard that the young bull elephant was following us for a while, when we reached a deeper part he turned around with satisfaction and disappeared with his mates. Everything happened so fast that we only looked at each other when we got away. When we were far and the stress went away we laughed at what happened while we cut down the seaweed. It was late night when I started thinking how long could we keep on ? Africa always reminds me, that despite everything, not a single picture worth a situation like this.

"
